Today, KOMBOH does for posters what Pizza Hut did for pizza. No, we’re not shoving wieners and spray cheese into every nook and cranny in sight, we’re letting you personalize the pan out of this piece of paper.
Feeling Hawaiian? Select “Sexier than Sax Man” and “Still Unemployed”. Or is Vegan more your style? Go for “Organically Greeny” and “Bland as a Potato”. Or is this loosely constructed pizza metaphor boring you to death? Grab a mouthful of “An Adult Diaper” instead.

Here’s a look at some of the terrifyingly ambitious thinking behind your favorite design duo from way back in 2009.
Little known fact: KOMBOH started as a school project that grew wildly out of hand — and we had to produce a process book. In a bid to pad it’s size (to better intimidate our classmates, you see) we dumped in entire passages of Orwell’s 1984. The physical book we submitted had bound with it several pages of a conveniently discarded Yellow Pages. Nobody noticed.

The entirety of Youth Vital Signs 2012, for the Calgary foundation. This is not actually the version that went to print, but it is the last version that I touched. The stats are actually very interesting, so I decided to put up the entire thing.

Juice Creative (a.k.a. that company I work for part/full time) is heavily involved with a pretty cool initiative called Imagination150 (i150), which is a sort of committee thing that … well, I’m not too sure what they do. But they want to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial in 2017 which is alright by me. Here’s the logo I made for them, a spin on the geometric centennial logo that many Canadians may be familiar with.
There’s some process stuff above too, showing a bunch of rejected designs.

For the ‘adult’ version of Vital Signs 2012, I developed an alphabet that drew inspiration from infographic-esque pictograms and measurement devices, including a couple alternates for common letters (E, L, S).

My boss at Juice is a fan of the Peace Bridge here in Calgary, which became a bit of a lightning rod for political criticism. Some people love the bridge and think it adds something important to an otherwise drab and blocky city, while others simply don’t like the idea of City Council spending any moolah at all. Personally, as someone who actually plans on continuing to live in Calgary (and not just work here), I think it’s great. Anyways, we made a shirt which got quite a bit of press coverage for some reason. I was even interviewed by the CBC!
The idea behind the shirt is simply that Calgary is in a sense joining a brotherhood of other cities that have Calatrava bridges — while ours doesn’t have the towering arches and soaring lines, it still has it’s own unique charm.

I thought it would be funny to submit an image of a giant pin in the Pin-Up show. Or make a statement about the objectification of women in pin-up art. Your choice.
Also, check out Mike’s series o’ Pin-Up posters if you haven’t already.

We were kindly asked by the team over at Sled Island to design fellow Calgary homeboy Chad Vangaalen’s poster for said festival. Mason Hastie, curator of this year’s Sled Island poster show, had a nice little Q&A with Avenue about the show. You can check out all the posters here. This post drops hyperlinks like hyperbombs.
